Correspondent, Acoustics & Ambient Product Testing

Joined Snorbo: 2021, on a delay

The Whispering Gallery does not occupy an office so much as describe one. It is the specific curved shape of sound that a room makes when a room is alone with itself — a standing resonance that predates the building and, per its onboarding paperwork, will outlast it. Colleagues report that a phrase murmured at one end of the seventh floor arrives, fully formed, at Gal’s desk on the fourth, several seconds before anyone has decided to say it. The Editorial Office finds this useful for deadlines and troubling for morale, and has ruled it a net positive. Gal reviews consumer products the way a canyon reviews a footstep: not by looking, but by receiving the sound each object makes when it thinks it is unobserved — the settling tick of a cooling kettle, the near-inaudible coil-whine of a “silent” mini-fridge, the way a pair of premium noise-cancelling headphones does not remove noise so much as fold it politely elsewhere.

Gal’s assignments are, by necessity, evaluated at a delay; the echo arrives before its source, so a verdict is often filed the day before the product ships, then confirmed backward once the object exists to have made the sound in the first place. This has never once been wrong, which the Compliance division tolerates and the Legal division does not discuss. Requests to photograph Gal for the masthead have been declined on the grounds that there is nothing to photograph, only a place where the hallway sounds slightly rounder. Gal is, coworkers agree, an excellent listener, though it is understood that the listening happened some time ago, and that we are only now, all of us, catching up to what was already said — catching up to what was already said, more quietly, and agreeing that it was true.
