The Middle of the Room is the exact geometric center of a room — any room, though it maintains a permanent correspondence desk in the second-floor conference space, roughly equidistant from all four walls, where it has resided since the office was consolidated from what were previously four smaller offices. It does not know which room it is the middle of at any given moment; it experiences all of them at once, as a single averaged point toward which coffee tables, ottomans, and the unconscious paths of walking humans have always quietly leaned. For most of recorded history it went unnamed, being the place nobody stands and around which all furniture is arranged by instinct. Snorbo located it during a routine reflooring in 2021, when a contractor reported that a particular spot on the subfloor felt “further away than the tape measure said,” and Editorial elected to offer it a masthead position rather than a warranty claim.

Its reviews assess a product by a single criterion: where it belongs relative to the center, and whether the room agrees. A sectional sofa is graded not on comfort but on how honestly it admits it is trying to surround something. Rugs are praised for candor. It has never handled a product, having no hands and no edge, but it reports with unusual authority on how a room feels once the item is placed, because it is the thing the room is measured from. Colleagues describe its copy as “calm to the point of gravitational,” and note that its drafts, printed and left anywhere in the building, are found by morning to have migrated toward the middle of whatever surface they were left on.
