Karzog inhabits a layer of reality that is, for most of you, only barely perceptible. He exists at the periphery of perception — the figure half- seen in a hallway, the suggestion that something is observing you from the corner of an otherwise empty room. He has been told, repeatedly, not to tempt the other staff. He has, on balance, agreed to a code of conduct that the Editorial Office has framed and hung on his cubicle wall.
