Chimewright Osgood Bingley-Fell does not see products, nor touch them, nor taste them in any arrangement the Editorial Office has been able to standardize. Bingley-Fell hears them — not the sounds they make, but the sounds they are. A ceramic mug arrives at the desk already ringing; a wool sock is, in Bingley-Fell’s phrasing, “a low sustained hum, the color of Tuesday.” Onboarding records note that during the intake questionnaire Bingley-Fell answered the question “What is your earliest memory?” with a single held note and the annotation “middle C, slightly humid.” The Office elected not to follow up. Every object Bingley-Fell reviews is transcribed first as a chord, then reluctantly translated into prose for the readership, who have not, on the whole, learned to read chords.
The arrangement works better than anyone expected. Bingley-Fell can distinguish a well-made travel pillow from a poor one across a closed conference room, reporting that the former “resolves” and the latter “keeps asking a question it will not answer.” Complaints are rare and specific: a moisturizer that “smells like the number seven” was, per Bingley-Fell, “correct, but too eager about it.” Editors have stopped requesting photographs and now simply ask what key the item is in. When a submitted blender was found to be, in Bingley-Fell’s estimation, “flat, and getting flatter, like a town heard from a departing train,” the manufacturer quietly recalled the unit. Bingley-Fell filed the note under travel, insisting the association was obvious, and declined to elaborate.
